Dragons use complete effort to down Russellville
It was a total team effort Tuesday for the Warren Central boys’ basketball team, which coasted past visiting Russellville 84-59.
Warren Central (22-3) had 11 players score while dishing out 15 assists on 33 field goals. The Dragons picked up momentum heading into Friday’s District 14 regular-season finale against Greenwood.
“The kids are starting to work hard,” Warren Central coach William Unseld said. “They are refocused. We got them back on the right track – well, they got themselves back on the right track. They are teenagers so they can get off track a little while.
“We are starting to buy into running our lanes, playing around the rim, and playing inside-out. When we do that, we are pretty good.”
Warren Central led wire-to-wire, scoring the first five points and quickly building a double-digit advantage after Skyelar Potter’s layup made the score 13-3 with 1:52 left in the first quarter.
The Dragons exploded for 32 points in the second quarter, leading by as many as 31 points before Elijah Kemp’s layup cut the deficit to 51-22 at halftime.
The margin ballooned to as much as 39 points in the third period, with Warren Central resting its starters for the final 1½ quarters.
Even with reserves in for the final 12 minutes, Warren Central still shot 55.9 percent from the field and forced 15 Russellville turnovers.
“We really guarded, especially early,” Unseld said. “We didn’t foul and put them on the free-throw line. We made them try to shoot over our length and limited them to one shot.
“This is the first game where we really pushed it. A couple of times they scored and three seconds later we are laying it in on the other end. We put more emphasis on that to get more easy baskets.”
Potter paced the Dragons with 23 points, while Jordan Cousin finished with 18 points and eight rebounds and Micale Mee added 13 points.
“We came in yesterday and had a really good practice,” Potter said. “We got up on them early and then put our bench in. That helps them get repetition and such, so it was a nice win.”
Unseld was also impressed with Tayton Smith, who scored nine points off the bench.
“We are trying to look for bodies,” Unseld said. “We found one tonight. Smith can really shoot it. He’s a sophomore. We are going to start playing him because he can make shots, he can spread the floor, he plays hard and he’s not scared of anybody.”
Kemp led Russellville (7-15) with 19 points, while Anthony Woodard added 11 points.
Warren Central will host Greenwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Russellville hosts Todd County Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
