The Bowling Green City Commission is slated to vote Tuesday on a request from NCM Motorsports Park for $152,354 to install electrical wiring that would allow the park to host an annual Christmas light display.

NCM Motorsports Park is asking for the funding from the Special Tourism Projects Fund of the Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

A memo from bureau Executive Director Sherry Murphy said the nonprofit NCM Motorsports Park would spend $140,000 per year to rent the lights, and expects as many as 15,000 cars to tour the lights starting in mid-November through December each year.

The park would undertake an extensive advertising campaign throughout the state and Tennessee, according to the memo. With the funding, the lights display could start this year.

The wiring would also allow for other night events to be held at the park, Murphy wrote.

Also on the agenda for the 4:30 p.m. meeting at City Hall is a rezoning that would pave the way for the region’s first Menards store.

Menards plans to build a 175,000-square-foot store along Campbell Lane and Eastland Street that will sell groceries, building materials, tools and fixtures. The plan calls for retail strip centers and restaurants to be built around Menards.

The plan includes two entrances off Campbell Lane into the development, with a traffic light at one of them. It also calls for a connection off Highland Way.

The City-County Planning Commission of Warren County last month voted unanimously to recommend approval of the rezoning request from residential to highway business.

Commissioners are also scheduled to vote on a $347,880 bid from Vescio’s Sportsfields of Lexington to build a synthetic turf field suitable for futsal play at Lampkin Park.

Futsal is a scaled-down version of soccer played on a basketball-style court with no walls and a smaller ball. The sport is gaining in popularity across the country.

The field would replace an asphalt court at the park.
