Flea market aims to help students lead at school

Warren East Middle School will have a flea market from 8 a.m. until people stop coming Thursday and Friday outside the school at 7031 Louisville Road.

Proceeds benefit the school’s Lighthouse Team, which is part of the Leader in Me initiative.

“We thought it would be a good fundraiser for our Lighthouse Team. We’re a Leader in Me school,” said school Youth Service Center Coordinator Brenda Lawrence. “We have a group of students that plan pep rallies and awards for students and teachers. It’s based on grades, good behavior, attendance and things like that.”

The setup fee is $25. Participants can have as much space as they want, but they have to bring their own tables, Lawrence said.

“They can bring just about anything they want to bring (to sell),” she said. “We’re going to be set up outside.”

School Principal David Cloyd said the Lighthouse Team builds the school’s culture.

“They organize pep rallies. They plan activities to recognize students. They’ll do things for the teachers from time to time,” he said. “They serve as kind of a student council to promote ways to improve the school. They’re like a voice for the students. There’s typically 15 to 20 students year to year. It’s a diverse representation of the school.”

The students have to apply and go through an interview process, Cloyd said.

“They have to have energy and enthusiasm, good speaking skills and good ideas to make the school better,” he said. “They definitely have to be strong students that demonstrate good attitude, and we definitely want them to be that positive role model for other students.”

Students on the team have to reapply each year, Cloyd said.

“They have the advantage if they were on the previous year because they know what it takes to be a Lighthouse Team member,” he said.

The school and the community benefit from the flea market, Lawrence said.

“It gives the community a chance to get involved. People in the community can get rid of things, and it benefits our school because we’re doing a $25 setup fee so the Leader in Me team can help the school morale,” she said. “It gives the students a chance to accomplish their goals as far as being a leader in the school.”
