Sutton, Dent sign with Miami (Ohio), Murray State

A pair of Bowling Green athletes signed national letters of intent Monday, with Sam Sutton signing to swim at Miami (Ohio) and Kristin Dent signing to run cross country/track at Murray State.

“I’m super excited and can’t wait,” Sutton said. “I am happy that all of my coaches and teammates and family members are here to support me. I can’t wait for Miami next year.”

Sutton said she considered Kentucky, Florida State and Vanderbilt but felt most at home at Miami.

“Miami made me feel like such a part of their family,” Sutton said.

Sutton finished fourth in the state in the 100-yard breaststroke last year – winning the region title in that event. She finished second across the region in the 200 individual medley, 10th in the state.

She said she is happy to have her college future locked up so she can focus on her senior year in the pool at Bowling Green.

“It is a really big relief,” Sutton said. “My sister didn’t decide until May where she wanted to go and she was a little stressed out. I am glad I am not going to be stressed, hopefully.”

Dent said she was happy to sign with Murray State.

“I’m so excited,” Dent said. “I am sad that my senior year is coming to an end pretty soon, but it is a great chance to keep running and to have new opportunities to set new goals.”

While Dent said she considered a few out-of-state schools, she ultimately decided to stay closer to home and run at Murray State.

“I loved the atmosphere of the campus and I loved meeting my new teammates,” Dent said. “The coaches were great. I just felt really good about it.”

Dent is coming off a cross country season that included a region championship and finished 38th in the state. She will go into her final year of track as the defending Class 3A, Region 2 champion in the 1,600-meter run.

“This is one of the things that has been stressing me out the most,” Dent said. “Being able to go into the track season already having a plan is a really big weight lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I can just run free.”
