Bowling Green rolls past Greenwood
The Bowling Green boys’ basketball team continued its hot start with a dominating 79-56 win over Greenwood on Tuesday at Bowling Green High School.
Bowling Green (4-0 overall, 1-0 District 14) clamped down on the defensive end and used a balanced attack to rack up another huge night on the offensive end – with the Purples scoring at least 73 points in all four games.
“It’s very important to win all your district games if you can, but it is extremely important to win your home games,” BG coach Derrick Clubb said. “We are excited to start the district season off with a win at home.
“I thought we were really good defensively the first quarter and a half. We had moments the rest of the game where we were really good, but we weren’t as consistent. I thought the biggest thing was we were consistent there for a quarter and half.”
Bowling Green opened the night with 17 straight points, holding the Gators scoreless in the first quarter.
Greenwood (1-3, 0-1) finally broke through on a layup by Jack Roberts with 6:38 left in the half, but the Purples scored the next 12 points to push the lead to 29-2.
The Purples led by as much as 28 points in the first half, before 3-pointers by Lance Upright and Peyton Loggins cut the deficit to 35-13 at halftime.
Bowling Green’s lead ballooned to as much as 30 points in the second half as the offense continued to put up points at a frantic pace. The Purples finished 14-for-27 from 3-point range, with seven players hitting at least one 3.
“(Houston Rockets coach) Mike D’Antoni would love that, wouldn’t he?” Clubb said. “Most of those shots were good shots and they were in the flow of the offense. Obviously there are always gonna be a couple we would like to have back, but when these kids push the ball and they find the open man and we play like that then I think we are pretty good.”
Kolbe Gray led Bowling Green with 17 points.
Connor Cooper added 15 points. Isaiah Mason chipped in 12 points, with Trevor Dennis finishing with 11 points and Jaxson Banks finishing with 10 points.
“As a senior I like to come out and set the tone,” Gray said. “We are getting comfortable now. Now that we have so many pieces … we just have to trust each other and play off that.”
Roberts had 16 points to lead Greenwood, while Ben Carroll added 10 points.
Greenwood will host South Warren at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Bowling Green will play at McCracken County on Saturday.
