Music from the Hill: the sophisticated folk rock sounds of Mythagoe

One of the most innovative and exciting bands to perform at Java City lately was the local folk rock band Mythagoe.  Combining great performance, unique arrangements and excellent musicianship, the effect of their concert on the students and faculty at Java city was pure enchantment.  Mythagoe features WKU music major Julia Fisher on vocals and bass, Kerry Pruitt also of the Lost River Cavemen on violin, Tim Shortt on drums and Artemus Sumetra on lead guitar and lead vocals.  Mythagoe is certainly a band that will be invited back to Java City in the future.

Hi Folks, thanks for coming out to play at Java City.  The crowd really seemed to enjoy your concert..  I am sure that folks around here would really like to know more about you.

Where did you get the name Mythagoe?

Tim: Arte made the name up, but I’m unsure what it means.

Artemus: I made it up because it was the coolest sounding word I could think of.

Can you tell us a bit about your personal and musical histories?

Tim: I am a 3rd generation musician, and I have been playing drums for 30 years. I played in Bowling Green with: The Radioactive Flowers, The Lunacats, and The Guild.

Kerry: I’m from Bowling Green, KY and I have 25+ years on fiddle

Artemus:  Twenty five exact years on guitar

Julia:  I am from Louisville KY and have been singing since I was 12.

How did you get started musically as Mythagoe?

Artemus: Tim, Julia, and Artemus are the core of the band, and Kerry was a featured musician for this gig and future gigs.

Tim: Arte asked me to fill in for The Java City gig, and I just took the job.

Who has influenced you as musicians? Any local musicians?

Artemus and Julia: the Catholic Church.

Tim: Not really, there are some great ones here, but I am most interested in business people who build successful operations.

Kerry: Led Zeppelin.

What is your favorite sort of gig?

Artemus and Julia: We really enjoyed the gig at WKU’s Java City! It’s the kind of gig we dig!

Kerry: All gigs!  Fun Fun Fun!

Tim: My favorite gig is one that pays a fair wage, takes care of the band, and conducts themselves in a professional business manner.

Your music is really unique, how do you define your sound?

Julia: That’s a very good question. Transitory.

Artemus: I agree with Julia.

Tim:  Hmm…..Dynamic world music with an emphasis on both structure and improvisational skills.

I know you write a lot of your music, where to you get the ideas for your songs?

Tim: What is the last thing the drummer said before the band fired him? “Hey guys I wrote a song”! LOL – I leave that to my friend Arte. We have written together over the last 20 years, but he is the main composer.

Artemus: Singing about songs is what I write about.

Where do you want go with your music?  Are you working on a CD?

Tim: Obviously I would like to share it with the world however; I will not give it away for free. I am personally not interested in record deals or the like. I am more interested in building a band that owns and retains rights to ALL intellectual property. I am beginning to make arrangements to get this band recorded in the spring.

Julia: It’s really too early to determine where our music is going. We would like to remain dynamic as a band in terms of style and by continuing to have guest musicians for our gigs. There’s no telling where Mythagoe will go.

Thanks for taking time to talk with us .Is there anything else you’d like to add?!

Tim: Jack thanks so much for the kind words, and your time to prepare our band review. It is nice to be noticed, and we look forward to working with you again soon.

Julia: We are currently booking gigs for 2012. If you liked what you heard at Java City, check out Artemus Sumetra on ReverbNation (Mythagoe cite coming soon).
