Carrier, Cowles among Kentucky high school hoops hall of fame inductees

Former Western Kentucky University and Bristow High School standout Darel Carrier and ex-Lady Topper player and head coach Mary Taylor Cowles are among the 17-person group set for induction Saturday into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in Elizabethtown.

Carrier, who also played for the ABA’s Kentucky Colonels, was {span}a prolific scorer at Bristow from 1956 to 1960. Carrier averaged 28 points per game as a freshman, 32 points his junior year and 33 points a game his senior season.{/span}

{span}For his career, Carrier scored more than 3,100 points, averaging more than 30 points a game and finishing as one of the state’s all-time leading scorers. He was selected to the all-state team in 1959 and 1960.{/span}

Cowles, who starred at Marshall County from 1983-87, {span}scored more than 1,900 points and helped lead the Marshals to four consecutive KHSAA state tournament appearances. One of the tournament runs ended with the 1984 state championship and an undefeated season of 34-0.{/span}

{span}Receiving all-state and all-tournament honors three times, Cowles was named Kentucky’s Miss Basketball in 1987.{/span}

{span}Other inductees are Erin Boley (Elizabethtown), Robert Brooks (Richmond Madison), Lisa Collins (Laurel County), Phil Cox (Cawood), Kyra Elzy (Oldham County), Manuel Forrest (Louisville Moore), coach Joe Harper (Brodhead, Monticello and Wayne County), Kenneth Kuhn (Louisville Male), Charlie Osborne (Flat Gap), Valerie Owens Combs (Louisville Butler), Harold Sergent (Ashland), coach Greg Todd (Berea and Lexington Catholic), Jack Upchurch (Wayne County), Bobby Washington (Dunbar), coach Russell Williamson (Inez) and coach Ray Vencill (Richmond Madison and Elizabethtown).{/span}

{span}The induction ceremony will be Saturday at the State Theater in Elizabethtown. A reception will be at 4:30 p.m. CDT, with the induction ceremony at 6:30 p.m. CDT.{/span}{&end}
