Deadline to register for primary approaching

Residents who plan to cast ballots in the state’s May 17 primary have less than two weeks to register to vote or make address changes.

April 18 is the last day to register for the primary, which will include the Democratic race for a presidential nominee and 10 candidates vying for the seat held by Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Bowling Green. Republicans held a state presidential caucus in March.

Warren County Clerk Lynette Yates said she hopes for a good turnout despite the fact that state Republicans have already had a chance to weigh in on a presidential nominee.

“Typically we have a 13 to 22 percent (primary) turnout. This is a big Democratic race, so I’m being optimistic,” Yates said. “I hope turnout will be 30 to 40 percent.”

She said she expects to see some confused voters May 17 who are expecting to vote for a Republican presidential nominee – “I definitely think so,” based on calls the clerk’s office has been getting, despite all the attention the caucus received, Yates said.

The Republican caucus statewide drew about 230,000 GOP voters – a turnout of about 17.9 percent – which was on par with the state’s recent primary turnouts.

Since the last presidential primaries in 2012, Warren County’s voter’s rolls have grown by almost 10,000 voters, according to statistics provided by Yates. In 2012, the county had 68,377 registered voters, compared to 77,106 this year. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 39,557 to 31,005 in the county.

This year in the Democratic side of the presidential race, Hillary Clinton has a clear national delegate lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders, but the Vermont senator has shown no signs of conceding the race to Clinton.

Paul is expected to easily defeat his two little-known Republican primary challengers and is expected to face Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, a clear favorite in a field of seven Democratic candidates, in November.

Voters can also register online until April 18 through the secretary of state’s website at sos.ky.gov.

Voters who will be out of the county May 17 may vote at the clerk’s office at the Warren County Courthouse on East 10th Avenue from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For those unable to make it to a polling location, applications for a mail-in ballot must be received by May 10.

Yates also said local election officers, who must be registered as voters in Warren County, are still needed for the primary.
