Man rescued from Drakes Creek
Several agencies responded Wednesday morning to a call made by Warren County Emergency Management after a man was heard screaming for help in Drakes Creek at Phil Moore Park.
Three first-time kayakers – a father, mother and son, whose names have not been released – had borrowed some boats and the father was not wearing the life jacket that was in the boat with him. Bowling Green Fire Department spokeswoman Marlee Boenig said she wasn’t sure of the sequence of the events, but somehow the father’s boat overturned and was swept down the creek. The man managed to hold on to a log.
Emergency management personnel were already at the scene checking water conditions, which they often do when there has been a lot of rain, Boenig said. The workers heard a man crying for help and called for further support.
“Within 30 minutes we had him out of the water and into our boat,” Boenig said. “To my knowledge no one received any injuries.”
Along with BGFD, other agencies that responded to the call included the Warren County Technical Rescue Team, Alvaton and Plano volunteer fire departments, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and The Medical Center EMS.
Boenig said the water was moving swiftly and it was not a good time to try to learn how to kayak for the first time. She said people need to make sure they wear personal floatation devices.
“They were just inexperienced and it turned out really well considering how awful it could have been,” Boenig said. “We had a collaborative effort from several agencies that came down to help get this gentleman to safety.”
