Titans keep finding ways to win
NASHVILLE – It may not always be pretty, but the Tennessee Titans keep finding ways to win.
Tennessee did it again Sunday against the Houston Texans with a 24-13 victory that was closer than the final score appeared. The Titans got in a first-half hole for the second straight week but clawed back to win and maintain the lead in the AFC South with an 8-4 record.
The eight wins haven’t come easy. It’s the third time Tennessee has fallen behind by double digits to a division foe before coming back to win. Sunday’s deficit was 10-0, but the Titans rallied to tie by halftime and took the lead on a Delanie Walker touchdown in the third quarter.
Tennessee needed a late interception from LaShaun Sims and a 75-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry with 46 seconds left to ice it.
“Find a way to win, man,” Tennessee linebacker Brian Orakpo said. “It’s never easy to win in this league. We are just finding ways to win. That’s what good teams do.”
Walker said finding a way to win is quickly becoming the identity for this Titans team.
“We ain’t going to give up,” Walker said. “There are some tough guys in this locker room. You see guys get hurt, come back in the game and play. You can’t ask for anything more. We are going to tough it out and get the W. I love it. I’m excited about it.”
The last six victories have exemplified Walker’s assertion that Tennessee keeps finding ways to win. Four of the six wins have been decided on the final possession, with Henry putting the game away with long touchdown runs with Tennessee trying to run out the clock.
As the Titans keep finding ways to win, Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota said the confidence continues to grow in the locker room.
“The guys have confidence in each other – that’s the atmosphere, that is the culture around here,” Mariota said.
Walker said the mindset is different than previous Titans teams, with Tennessee not getting discouraged by slow starts or early deficits.
“In the past years I don’t think we had the fight,” Walker said. “We’ve got the fight to finish games (this year). We start out slow, but we finish it. That is all we can ask for.”
Sunday’s win gave the Titans a 4-1 division record and allowed Tennessee to continue to control its playoff destiny. Tennessee and Jacksonville are tied for the division lead, with Tennessee holding the tiebreaker. The two teams meet the final week in Nashville.
Before that, the Titans have three straight games against the NFC West – road trips to San Francisco and Arizona before a Christmas Eve matchup with the division-leading Los Angeles Rams.
Mariota said all the Titans have to do is keep finding ways to win.
“That’s all that really matters,” Mariota said. “When it comes down to it, if you can win these games that you need to, it doesn’t matter what the score is.”
