Stone still working while recovering from surgery, radiation
State Rep. Wilson Stone, D-Scottsville, didn’t let the discovery of a brain tumor derail his re-election campaign in 2018. Now, with a surgery and more than a month of radiation treatment behind him, he’s back on the job.
On Oct. 14, shortly after having a “spell” while teaching an adult Sunday school class, Stone went to The Medical Center at Bowling Green, where the tumor was discovered.
Despite the diagnosis, Stone kept up his campaign and was re-elected in November in the 22nd District, receiving 7,952 votes to Republican opponent Brian “Tiger” Gann’s 7,178.
Stone said he had a surgery Oct. 23 and later went through 33 days of radiation treatment.
“I’m doing good,” he said. “I’ve still got to go back to the doctor, different things to look at, but I’m doing well.”
Stone said he plans to return to the hospital Monday so doctors can check on the effect the surgery has had.
Between the date of the diagnosis and Election Day, Stone posted occasional health updates on his Facebook page, including an Oct. 24 post that said his surgeon was “ very pleased with the operation and the results of the MRI.”
Stone said he attended two legislative meetings in December and two meetings last week and is now back full time.
So far, Stone said his recovery is going well.
“I’ve not been sick,” he said. “I’ve been up and around all the time. I’ve been working.”
Stone said his workload is as large as ever, though he didn’t mention any legislation he plans to be especially focused on in the current legislative session.
He has been somewhat preoccupied with meeting his new co-workers – Kentucky’s 30 representatives who were elected for the first time in November.
“It’s a completely different sort of family,” he said.
Stone has been a state representative for the 22nd District, which is composed of Allen, Simpson and part of Warren counties, since 2008.
