Bowling Green to host Hoopin’ on the Hill
Prep basketball fans will get a chance to see some of the top prospects in the country this weekend with the Hoopin’ on the Hill Classic at Bowling Green High School.
The three-day showcase will feature 33 players who have Division I offers, eight in the top 100 and seven Western Kentucky University targets including junior Charles Bassey with Aspire Academy in Louisville. Bassey is ranked No. 3 in his class according to ESPN.
The event is part of the Grind Session, which created the first-ever winter circuit of elite high school basketball events.
Bowling Green coach Derrick Clubb said the tournament came about in the last week and a half, when the Grind Session reps reached out with the intent of doing a tournament in Bowling Green.
“They are great guys,” Clubb said. “Their mission is to put a great group of guys on the floor. They are kinda like us, we just like to play basketball. It was a good match.”
Other WKU targets who are expected to participate are Terry Armstrong and Julian Dozier, Jr. with Bella Vista (Ariz.) Prep, KyKy Tandy with University Heights, and Tennessee Prep’s Traizon Byrd, Denver Jones and Brandon Nicholas.
Aspire also features a pair of Division I signees – TJ Smith, who has signed with Toledo, and Jacobi Gordon, a California signee ranked 89th overall by ESPN.
The showcase will feature a four-team tournament that will feature Bella Vista, Tennessee Prep, Aspire and Believe (Tenn.) Prep Academy on Friday and Saturday, with two separate games featuring Tennessee Prep Post Grads vs. teams from Believe Post Grad.
Bowling Green will also play two games, opening the festivities against University Heights at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Purples will also face Adair County at 5 p.m. Saturday. Adair County features the No. 1-ranked freshman according to Future 150 in former Purple Zion Harmon.
The two schools were scheduled to meet in a shootout in McCracken County in early January, but the game was postponed.
“Zion is getting to come back to Bowling Green,” Clubb said. “Everybody is really excited about that.”
The event will feature four games Friday and Saturday and will wrap up at 1 p.m. Sunday with a single game between Adair County and Murray. Saturday’s games will begin at 12:30 p.m.
“It’s going to be fun,” Clubb said. “You are going to see high-level, major Division I players. We are excited about it.”
