A Bittersweet Ending – 00 the Rabbit & Fat Box (08.13.2010)
There are last shows and there are last shows, 00 the Rabbit’s outing was of the latter on Friday, July 13th. The crowd felt it, packed in like sardines and wiggling around franticly to the music, trying to soak up the sound one last time before pouring out into the street to brag that they were there.
Show opener Fat Box worked the crowd in the right direction, opening with original music and carrying the first half of the show with a good mix of their work and covers. When asked about their performance, bassist Kevin Woolen said the show was one of their better outings because the timing was right.
By the time Double Zero reached the stage, Tidballs was pure chaos, the crowd with their shining faces turned expectantly at the band. They weren’t disappointed – from the first note to last note, the music was a moment of unity and a farewell to the city that has always been good to them. The rising wave of the end hit a high watermark when the band broke out Tom Waits; the balcony was shaking from the dancers up top against the banister, the floor one fluid movement of people shimmying along to the beat. The title track from Double Zero’s new album, “Headcount”, kept the momentum and movement going. It’s a standout track that grabs the listener by the both their ears and their feet.
The wave broke when Double Zero started to thank everyone graciously for coming, the cheers of the audience a thank you in return. While this show may have been their last bar show, Double Zero’s absolutely-final-show will be at the Starry Nights Festival, an upcoming festival not to be missed.
