Richardsville Elementary named one of 328 healthiest schools in America for 2016

Richardsville Elementary School received national acclaim when it was named as one of America’s healthiest schools last month.

The school was included with a list of 328 schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, an organization founded by the American Hearth Association and the Clinton Foundation.

Howell Wechsler, CEO of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, said in a news release that students attending healthier schools have a better chance of success.

“Research tells us students who attend healthy schools perform better academically, have better attendance and their behavior improves,” he said.

To be recognized, all schools had to meet or exceed updated federal nutrition standards for school meals, offer school breakfast to their students every day, meet or exceed snack and beverage requirements for the federal Smart Snacks in School standards, implement district wellness policies and report progress annually and provide students with at least 60 minutes of physical education per week and ensure activity throughout the school day, the release said.

Richardsville Elementary received bronze status.
