WKU Continuing Education Offers Grant Writing Workshop
WKU Continuing Education and the Political Science Department are partnering to offer a workshop to help local organizations and institutions develop successful grant-writing skills. Through the Continuing Education Grant Writing Workshop, participants will learn how to locate grant opportunities, improve grant-writing skills, write proposals, understand evaluation criteria and package application materials. The workshop will also teach grant-writing ethics and strategies for developing budgets and planning for future funding.
Dr. Victoria Gordon, director of the Center for Local Government within the WKU Political Science Department will lead the workshop. Dr. Gordon has 15 years of government, administrative and grant-writing experience. She also served as a full-time grant writer/reviewer for Lincoln University in Missouri. Other seasoned grant writers from the WKU community will also lend their expertise.
“In an economic environment where budgets are tighter, and giving is down, it is vital that grant writers are well prepared, organized and equipped to demonstrate funding need for their organizations,” said Gordon. “This workshop will help participants find appropriate funding agencies and help with letter of inquiry and proposal preparation.”
Anyone involved in the grant process, including community and nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and local government agencies, as well as university faculty, staff and graduate students, is encouraged to participate. Gordon said she hopes to see participants from all backgrounds, including those with no experience and those with significant grant-writing skills. “We hope that those who have experience with grant writing will share their knowledge,” she said. Gordon said she will also provide one-on-one consultation to discuss specific needs of each participant.
The four-day workshop takes place May 20 from 5-9 p.m., May 21 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., May 27 from 5-9 p.m. and May 28 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the WKU Main Campus.
