Tops still in action in summer collegiate wood bat leagues
A few updates on current Western Kentucky baseball players in action this summer in collegiate wood bat leagues:
• Three Hilltoppers are on the Alexandria (Va.) Aces roster in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League.
Rising senior catcher Hunter Wood is off to a solid start for the aces. He’s batting .308 (4 for 13) with a double and four RBIs. Rising sophomore right-hander Micah Kaczor won his first start for Alexandria, allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts in five innings. Rising sophomore Evan Acosta has also seen action in relief, and has struck out four in four innings.
• WKU’s Harrison Scanlon and Grant Malott are teammates with the Leesburg (Fla.) Lightning in the Florida Collegiate Baseball League.
Scanlon, an infielder and a rising redshirt junior for the Tops, is off to a strong start, batting .308 (8 for 26) with three doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Malott, a rising junior outfielder, has scuffled to a .130 batting average (3 for 23) but has a double, a triple and a home run this summer.
• Rising WKU junior infielder Steven Kraft is playing for the Petersburg (Va.) Generals in the Coastal Plains League. Kraft is currently batting .286 (2 for 7) with a double and a triple.
• Rising WKU junior left-hander Logan Weins is pitching for the New Market (Va.) Rebels in the Valley Baseball League. Weins has made two starts in three appearances for the Generals. He’s 0-1 with a 7.56 ERA in 8 1/3 innings with five strikeouts so far.
