Glasgow Middle School to host Nashville artist known for colorful sculptures

Glasgow Middle School students will soon collaborate with Nashville-based artist Beth Reitmeyer, known for her colorful sculptures and installation art, to add a one-of-a-kind piece to their school.

“They’re going to create an artwork with her, and then she’ll assemble it,” said Jennifer Fritsch, the middle school’s art teacher.

Fritsch invited Reitmeyer to visit the school as part of annual visiting artist series that allows students to work with and learn from a professional visual artist. Last year, the school invited Denver-based artist Kelsey Montague, who contributed a mural showcasing a pair large wings in the style for which she’s known.

Doors open to this year’s unveiling event at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday at Glasgow Middle School, 105 Scottie Drive, Fritsch said. Admission is $5, but children 4 years old and younger are free, she said.

The annual visiting artist series is meant to show students an example of what it takes to be a professional artist, Fritsch said, but this year’s event has a special twist given that Reitmeyer’s work is three-dimensional.

Many of Reitmeyer’s pieces draw inspiration from nature, capturing flowing rivers, starry skies and kaleidoscopic, crystalline geodes.

“Her artwork is very delicate-looking, but at the same time it’s very strong,” Fritsch said of Reitmeyer’s work.

Fritsch said she was interested in Reitmeyer’s work because of its scientific and mathematical elements. Students will be creating their own pieces that fit together in a monumental piece assembled by Reitmeyer, Fritsch said.
