Roller Coaster Yard Sale

The Roller Coaster Yard Sale is underway! To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of this event and to honor its founder, Sarah Ann Bowers, a celebration event took place at Freedom School on Saturday, September 11. The Roller Coaster Yard Sale Committee planted a blue spruce tree at Freedom School and placed a memorial plaque to honor Sarah’s involvement in the Roller Coaster Yard Sale, formerly known as the Roller Coaster Fair. In 1986, Mrs. Bowers formed the first Roller Coaster Yard Sale Committee in an effort to draw attention to the curvy, hilly and often dangerous Highway 63 which went right through her home community of Temple Hill, Kentucky. Since then, improvements have been made to the highway and the Roller Coaster Yard Sale has grown to include Highway 63 down into Tennessee and around Dale Hollow Lake.

Shoppers from all over will travel the route September 30 and October 1-2 searching for antiques, glassware, bargains, good food, fresh produce, furniture, crafts, leather goods and other items all while enjoying the hospitality of south central Kentucky and northeast Tennessee residents.

Attending the celebration held at Freedom School south of Temple Hill, Kentucky, were family and friends of Sarah Ann Bowers, members of the Temple Hill Lions Club, members of the Freedom School Committee, members of the Roller Coaster Yard Sale Committee and participants in the annual event. Donnie Peden, Sarah’s great nephew shared touching stories about his Aunt Sarah. He was followed by Andrea Burckhard from Byrdstown, Tennessee and Chair of the Roller Coaster Yard Sale Committee, who first met Sarah in 2002. Many stories were shared by friends who worked with Sarah on projects she was involved in.

Kentucky communities that participate in the Roller Coaster Yard Sale include Glasgow, Temple Hill and Cave City in Barren County; Burkesville-Cumberland County; Edmonton-Metcalfe County; Tompkinsville-Monroe County; and many small communities around the major towns. Communities in Tennessee include Byrdstown-Pickett County; Celina-Clay County; and Livingston-Overton County; and many small communities
