WKU’s Morris, two former Tops to compete at IAAF World Championships

Western Kentucky rising senior Julius Morris and former WKU track and field team members Emmanuel Dasor and Gavin Smellie are set to compete at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in London beginning this weekend.

Competition is from Friday through Aug. 13 and fans will be able to watch the best athletes in the world – a record 2,038 athletes from 205 teams participate in the British capital.

“I wish them much success at the IAAF World Championships in London,” WKU track and field head coach Erik Jenkins said in a news release. “Their qualification for this meet is another testament to their talent, discipline and commitment to the sports of track and field. All three of these athletes have competed valiantly for WKU and I am happy to see them compete on this elite stage!”

Morris, already a two-time NCAA All-American entering his senior season at WKU, is set to represent his homeland of Montserrat. The current Hilltopper will compete in the 200-meter dash, which commences Monday at 12:30 p.m. CDT, with heats.

Dasor will again don the colors of Ghana at the event after competing at the Rio Olympic Games last summer. Dasor will take part in the 400-meter race with heats beginning on Saturday at 4:45 a.m. CDT.

The third Hilltopper competing at the IAAF World Championships is Gavin Smellie, a 2010 WKU graduate and 2012 Olympian. Smellie will represent Canada at the event, running in both the 100 meters and 4×100-meter relay. The 100-meter preliminaries will kick off the 2016 outing with the competition opening at 1 p.m. CDT on Friday. Smellie will begin relay action at 4:55 a.m. CDT on Aug. 12.

Action from the London Stadium, venue of the 2012 Olympic Games, will be available to watch across all of the IAAF’s continental areas via YouTube and Facebook Live.
