Women capitalize on farmhouse chic

RUSSELLVILLE — After roughly 30 years of repurposing and selling used furniture, Peggy Steele decided to open a store with a much broader focus.

Farmhouse Urban Designs, a store Steele opened with her daughter Whitley in September, has the repurposed furniture the duo still fixes up and sells. Many of the items with bright new coats of paint hold up a trove of the store’s other wares, which includes clothes, soaps, scented candles, leather wallets, cookbooks and a wealth of various home decor accents.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, customers can expect the smell of potpourri and the sounds of Christmas music piped in over the radio to greet them when they step into the shop.

Steele said she decided to branch out into selling clothes, which include winter essentials such as knit caps and scarves to jeans and shirts, many of which, at this time year, bear messages like “Merry Christmas,” alongside furniture “just to have a mix of the old and the new.”

Steele got started in the business of selling furniture in Greenville at a furniture store her family owned, she said. She branched off into repurposing old furniture, which can include stripping, surfacing, priming and painting the piece.

“I like to paint so I (painted) a piece and then it just kind of evolved to where that’s what we were doing,” she said.

Steele’s daughter Whitley said she’s been in the business of repurposing furniture with her mother since she was a teenager.

“I’ve been working with her furniture and houses since I was in high school, so it’s kind of second nature,” she said.

Since opening Farmhouse Urban Designs, there’s been interest in the store from throughout the area, Whitley said.

“Everybody’s been very welcoming, very excited to have us here,” she said.

Whitley has also heard from numerous customers over the last couple months that there aren’t other stores in the area that feature a mix of clothing, decor, furniture and assorted gifts at all similar to what Farmhouse offers.

With Farmhouse located on North Main Street, people in the Russellville area don’t have to go out of town for their leisurely shopping, she said.

“A lot of people comment on the prices and not having to travel far,” she said.

Anita Litterall, who stopped by the store for the first time Wednesday, said she was happy to have a place like Farmhouse Urban Designs in Russellville.

Having moved to Logan County from Nashville, Litterall said she’s used to bigger areas with more opportunities for shopping and a wider variety of places to go to.

“We need more places to get rid of our money,” she said.

While looking around a part of the store where displays for scented candles, Christmas clothing and purses converged, Litterall said she was impressed by the breadth of items the shop had for sale.

“It’s kind of like a girls’ specialty shop,” she said before taking a whiff of an apple cider scented candle.

Carla Statton, another first-time customer, said she found it charming and was also impressed by the scope of items for sale.

“I think it’s very quaint,” she said. “They have a lot of variety of things to choose from.”

She also found the store’s “welcoming” atmosphere appealing.

“I think it makes you fell very at home when you come in,” she said.

In Russellville, Farmhouse Urban Designs is one-of-a-kind, Statton said.

“We don’t have a lot of things like this in Russellville,” she said. “It’s nice to have something new to check out.”
