Fruit of the Loom sending clothing to hurricane victims

Bowling Green-based Fruit of the Loom joined the effort to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area.

The company is donating nearly 1 million pieces of clothing, sending four semi-trailers full of essential items such as underwear, T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants to Houston-area residents affected by the storm and the resulting flooding.

Hurricane Harvey, which parked over Houston and dumped more than 4 feet of rain on the city, is responsible for at least 70 deaths and may end up costing $150 billion. Thousands of Texas residents are still displaced.

“Here at Fruit of the Loom, our hearts are going out to the victims of Hurricane Harvey,” said Melissa Burgess Taylor, the company’s chairman and CEO. “We know they are in need of the most basic apparel items and we feel a responsibility to aid in that relief.”

The products departed from Fruit of the Loom distribution centers in Montgomery, Ala., and Palmetto, S.C., and were scheduled to arrive Friday in Houston.

Fruit of the Loom, which has more than 1,000 employees in Bowling Green, has been a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway since 2002. The company has expanded and now produces such brands as Russell Athletics, Spalding, JERZEES and Vanity Fair. The company employs nearly 30,000 people in 26 countries.
