Bassey wins 9th C-USA Freshman of the Week award
Western Kentucky center Charles Bassey averaged a double-double over two Pod 1 victories last week, securing his ninth Conference USA Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week award Monday.
The 6-foot-11, 245-pound native of Lagos, Nigeria, is now one weekly freshman honor away from tying the C-USA record of 10 set by Rice’s Marcus Evans in 2015-16.
Bassey averaged 13.5 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last week as WKU earned a road victory at Alabama-Birmingham and a home win over Southern Mississippi in the top tier of C-USA Bonus Play.
He notched his league-leading 14th double-double in a 73-67 win against the Blazers on Thursday with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
He then tallied nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks in 31 minutes in Sunday’s 76-71 triumph over Southern Miss.
Bassey shot 52.9 percent from the field during the week and made nine of 10 free throws. He also grabbed two steals and six offensive rebounds.
The Hilltoppers conclude the regular season against Texas-San Antonio at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at E.A. Diddle Arena.
