Mammoth Cave National Park rangers will show kids the ins and outs of firefighting on Saturday, October 15.   Thirty-minute activities run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., are free of charge and open to the public.

“Junior Firefighter Day is full of outdoor fun,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed.   “Youngsters will learn about the fire triangle, fire tools and fire weather.   Our park brush fire engine will stop by in the afternoon and we’ll help kids try out the big hoses.”

“We will focus on outdoor skills that firefighters use,” said Ranger Darlene Owens, who is coordinating the day.   “Most activities are geared for 6-12 year olds, but everyone is welcome.   We do ask that parents be present.   Be ready for some great photo ops.”

The day begins with a Jr. Firefighter Task Book, which will be issued to participants at beginning of program.     Rangers will sign their task books as the kids complete their training, leading to a firefighter badge and patch. 

The Junior Firefighter training schedule includes:

• 10:00-10:30         Fire Triangle/Fire Behavior Triangle – learn the basics of starting a fire.
• 10:30-11:00          Be a Weatherman – learn to read clouds, temperature and humidity using a belt weather kit.
• 11:00-11:30          Tools of the Trade – learn what tool to use and when. Put out a “spot fire” with a backpack bladder-bag.
• 11:30-12:00          Look Up, Look Down, Look All Around – be aware of your surrounding with wilderness survival basics.
• 12:00-12:30          Orienteering – learn to use a map and compass.
• 12:30-1:00           “Pack Test” relay – firefighters must be able to carry 45 lbs. for 3 miles within 45 minutes.   Kids will wear a weighted vest (10 lbs.) in a relay to be the feel for the weight of firefighter gear.
• 1:00-2:00              Put Out The Fire!    Park Law Enforcement Rangers will show-and-tell the park’s brush engine, and squirt the fire hoses.
