Meth dealers agree to federal prison terms
A Bowling Green man who jumped out of a motel room window to avoid capture by police during a drug investigation accepted a plea agreement that recommends a 20-year prison sentence.
Bradley Kyle Waters, 35, pleaded guilty on Thursday in U.S. District Court to conspiracy to possess 50 grams or more of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and conspiracy to possess 50 grams or more of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.
A co-defendant, Laura Woods, 31, of Bowling Green, pleaded guilty to the same charges on Thursday, accepting a deal that offers a 10-year sentence in exchange for her plea.
Federal prosecutors accused the pair of acquiring crystal meth, with the intent to sell, between June 2014 and December 2014.
Waters and Woods came to the attention of law enforcement on Dec. 4, 2014, when two officers from the Bowling Green Police Department attempted to locate a person at the Microtel Inn who was the subject of an arrest warrant.
A clerk at the motel told police that the motel’s computer showed no information for that person. The clerk then informed the officers, Detective Hany Elhubishi and Officer Brandon Stice, about two people who had requested adjoining rooms.
“The individuals had also requested no room service and had advised the staff that they had cameras in the rooms,” Waters’ plea agreement stated.
The city police officers attempted to make contact with the occupants at each room. Stice heard a male voice say he was putting on clothes while Elhubishi, who knocked on the door to the neighboring room, heard a female voice say she was putting on clothes.
Woods answered the door and, when asked about the whereabouts of the man, told police that she was alone and there were no men in either room, according to court records.
“Woods was agitated and her speech was very fast and appeared to be under the influence of drugs,” Waters’ plea agreement stated.
The police obtained search warrants for the rooms after seeing a large amount of pills lying on the bed in several containers. During an interview with city police, Woods admitted that Waters had been in the room, but had jumped out of the window out of hearing the police at the door, according to court records.
Waters had called a woman to pick him up in order to avoid arrest, according to court records. He was arrested in Ohio on a federal warrant.
Law enforcement seized about eight ounces of crystal meth from the motel rooms, along with 17,494 dosage unites of prescription narcotics, about $14,000 in cash, several electronic devices and drug paraphernalia, court records show.
Woods was arrested and charged initially with trafficking in a controlled substance. Chemical analysis of the suspected meth revealed it to have a greater than 99 percent purity, according to federal court records.
