Featured artist: Bob Gregory

Bob Gregory was originally born and raised in Bowling Green, Kentucky but lived for a while in Texas and Nashville. He has now made his home in Franklin, Kentucky where he has a room that he uses as his studio in his home.  He paints menu boards and canvas paintings. Larger projects are on location or in his outside studio.  “I have had no art training and didn’t study art in school but, I found I have the talent”.

While looking for extra Christmas money in 2009, Bob was talking to guys in town and got a few jobs painting windows. He has since made a website that has pulled in more interest in his form of art.  That was two years ago and now it has become his commercial business called ArtFX Design Studios and said he stays busy.  For fun he started painting on canvas last year when he has the time.

“I generally do commercial art work such as murals for restaurants, retail businesses and children’s rooms as well as custom chalkboard type signs and menu boards, and custom fine art pieces, along with offering unique artistic solutions and services for commercial and residential clients. Basically anything that requires an artistic touch,” commented Bob.

Mr. Gregory said that he does a lot of holiday window murals for local businesses during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.  He has painted logos on roofs, recreated old lettering and logos on old trucks, painted charactures of business owners, and painted large lettering messages, created custom fine art pieces, t-shirt designs, logos and more.

I use acrylic paints on all my projects unless an enamel or a special paint is required. As for the fine art pieces, I use acrylic only.

Bob said, “As far as my personal art is concerned, I like to do medium to larger cubist style paintings. I find the cubist type paintings to be much more interesting than painting subject matter in a standard sort of way.  I just started painting what I liked and messed around with it and just got better with it.  Honestly, how many more flowers and tobacco barn paintings do we have to look at”?   He is currently studying works by Picasso, Braque, Juan Gris, Metzinger and other original cubist painters.

A current client is the Nashville Predators.  He completed the lettering for their pro shop which is inside the Bridgestone Arena and is doing an inside mural for the pro shop now.  His Mayan painting was on the cover of the Belize, Magnum Report, Travel to Belize Magazine and the Fine Art America.com where he sold some photos and artwork as prints.

Bob said that his commercial and residential murals, the custom chalkboard and mini board signs are unique to each customer.   He uses chalk board paint not chalk.  He is a member of the Simpson County Guild of Artists & Craftsmen.
