Potter party to feature fun, collect books for school
Southcentral Kentuckians will be able to relive the magic of Harry Potter with a prerelease party of J.K. Rowling’s script of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”
The party will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 1680 Campbell Lane. Activities will include Harry Potter-themed coloring, trivia, a Wrebbit 3D Hogwarts Astronomy Tower puzzle and a sweepstakes that customers can enter daily through July 30 for a chance to win a set of seven Harry Potter Limited Edition Cover Prints available exclusively at Barnes and Noble. Admission is free.
“There will be a selfie station, a Quidditch broom for them to take pictures with and coloring and trivia for kids and adults,” said Bertena Varney, chapter organizer for the Harry Potter Alliance Fandom of the Phoenix, which is helping Barnes and Noble with the party. “There will be half an hour for each station. They will be able to rotate to each one. They can preorder ‘Cursed Child’ while they’re there.”
The party is a Barnes and Noble initiative, Varney said.
“The movies have been gone for five years now and the books are older. People don’t realize a new one is coming out. It’s not a big, thick book. It’s the play,” she said. “They released the play last week in London. People still love Harry Potter. It’s really to introduce a new generation to Harry Potter. I’m glad they want to read books. That’s what I did constantly.”
The party isn’t solely about Harry Potter. The Fandom of the Phoenix is also hosting a book drive from Friday through July 31 for Warren Elementary School. Participants can tell a cashier that they want to purchase a book for a child at the school. They are approximately $3.99 to $4.99, Varney said.
“In August we will be presenting books for the school,” she said. “We’re doing kindergarten through third right now, and later we’ll do it for the older kids. We’ve already dropped off 1,500 books for Warren Elementary, Moss Middle (School) and Warren Central (High School).”
The Fandom of the Phoenix is Bowling Green’s chapter of the international Harry Potter Alliance. The local chapter has done activities dealing with illiteracy, animal rights and teaching people how to play Quidditch.
“We take fans of the series and make heroes of them. We use Harry Potter themes for activism. We think, ‘What would Harry do?’ He wouldn’t sit around and put up with things,” Varney said. “J.K. Rowling endorses us. We’re Harry Potter fans. We’re a little crazy and do nice things for the community.”
The Fandom of the Phoenix will also help with the “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” release party at 8 p.m. July 30. The books will not be for sale until 12:01 a.m. There will be puzzles, games for kids and adults, giveaways and special food in the cafe. There will also be a costume contest.
