WKU splits softball doubleheader at home
Host Western Kentucky earned a split Wednesday against visiting Bowling Green, picking up a 7-2 win in the opener before falling 6-4 in the nightcap at the WKU Softball Complex.
WKU senior Taylor Proctor as well as freshman Haylee Towers each registered their second career home runs in the twinbill.
In the opener, WKU (12-9) on Brittany Vaughn’s sacrifice fly RBI.
Bowling Green got on the board in the top half of the fourth with a two-run shot over the left-center field wall. In the bottom of the fourth, the Hilltoppers batted around the order as WKU tacked on five runs to take a 6-2 lead in the tilt. Kelsey McGuffin tallied the first run in the frame on double steal of second and home. A couple batters later, Stowers singled through the right side scoring Adarian Gray. Vaughn singled in a run, and Proctor followed with an RBI double off the left-field wall. One batter later, Morgan McElroy drew a bases-loaded walk to force home another run.
Proctor’s solo home run in the sixth accounted for the game’s final run.
Four different Hilltoppers registered a multi-hit game in the day’s opening game including Stowers, Vaughn, Proctor and Gray.
Towers went the distance in the circle for the sixth time this season, improving to 3-5 on the year. The freshman finished with six strikeouts in the outing.
In Game 2, WKU grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-run single by Proctor and Haylee Towers’ two-run homer.
Bowling Green picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Hilltopper lead in half. The Falcons went on to tally two more runs in each of the sixth and seventh frames as well.
WKU’s Kathryn Downing worked into the top of the sixth inning in her start, giving up four runs, before Kelsey Aikey came in for a relief appearance. Aikey totaled three outs in the appearance before moving into right field for Downing to come back to record the final two outs.
Downing finished with seven strikeouts on the day to match her career high. Aikey took the loss in the circle, moving to 2-2 on the season.
The Hilltoppers return to action Thursday, hosting Ohio University for a single game at 5 p.m.
