Lady Toppers add JUCO transfer Chang to roster

Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis program announced Monday the addition of Emily Matias Da Silva Chang of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who has signed her letter of intent and will play with the WKU tennis squad this spring.

Chang has played the past two years at ASA Miami, the No. 2 junior college team in the country. There, Chang was named the 2016 JUCO Player to Watch and the 2017 Sophomore Player of the Year. She also reached the final rounds in both singles and doubles at the NJCAA Women’s National Championship last spring.

Upon Chang’s arrival, the WKU tennis team will include seven players from seven countries, three hailing from South America.

“Emily will be a great asset for our program and comes in with a lot of international and collegiate experience,” WKU coach Jonatan Berhane said in a news release. “She will fit in perfectly with the group of girls we have on our team.”

WKU finished the fall tournament season with a singles record of 34-18 (.654) and doubles record of 14-10 (.583). Led by 2017 Conference USA Coach of the Year Berhane, the Lady Toppers earned four all-conference accolades last year and made their first-ever semifinal appearance in a conference tournament.
