6-7 wing Nelson commits to Hilltoppers
Marek Nelson has made his decisions.
He’ll classify as a Class of 2017 prospect. And he’ll play his college basketball at Western Kentucky.
Nelson, a 6-foot-7 wing from Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kan., tweeted Saturday afternoon that he’s committed to the Hilltoppers.
Nelson, a senior at Sunrise Christian, was considering staying for a prep season and reclassifying to the Class of 2018. But one week after he visited WKU’s campus, the forward decided to join coach Rick Stansbury’s Topper program.
Nelson posted a note on his Twitter account thanking God, his family and his basketball coaches for their support during his career. He followed by announcing his college destination.
“After analyzing all of my options and opportunities to succeed academically and athletically, one school has been in line with my plans for the future,” Nelson wrote. “With that being said, I proudly announce that I will be committing to Western Kentucky University!! Thank you to Coach Stansbury for believing in me fully.”
Nelson told the Daily News earlier this week that he was weighing the decisions of whether to come out in the Class of 2017 or ’18 and, if he came out this season, where to play.
Nelson was offered scholarships by Kansas State, Utah State, Sam Houston State, New Hampshire and New Orleans, he said. Memphis and Texas were among programs that showed recent interest.
WKU is the only school where Nelson took an official visit.
Darius Coleman, director of Nelson’s Lone Star Elite AAU program, said he encouraged him to look at colleges where he could make an immediate impact.
“Well, I just told him that, ‘If you can get a situation in ‘17 where you have the opportunity to play early and often and be able to step in as a freshman and get things that you want, there may not be a reason to stay (in prep school) for ’18,’ ” Coleman said earlier this week. “I know high majors have been coming after him here late. I just told him it’s all about fit and the coaching staff.
“Coach Stansbury is really high on him. … When you have a coach that really wants you like that and you have the opportunity, there may not be a reason to go ’18.”
Nelson is ranked as a three-star forward by Rivals. He described himself as a versatile prospect who can play both guard and both forward positions.
“I take pride in being able to do whatever my coach needs me to do and being that guy that can go out and get things done on the offensive end as well as the defensive end,” Nelson said. “The defensive end for sure because I take pride in defense. I’m a lockdown defender with size and guard skills.”
Nelson is yet another newcomer for a Hilltopper program that will be full of them in 2017-18.
Forward Moustapha Diagne is enrolled at WKU and is expected to join the roster after this semester. Forward Robinson Idehen and guard Miles Weber are also enrolled and are expected to join after the 2017 fall semester.
Five-star center Mitchell Robinson, four-star guard Josh Anderson and three-star guard Taveion Hollingsworth all signed in the fall. Junior college guard Jordan Brangers and high school guard Jake Ohmer signed this spring.
Austin Peay guard Jared Savage picked WKU earlier this month as his transfer destination.
Players from 2016-17 with eligibility remaining include forwards Justin Johnson and Jabari McGhee and guards Tyler Miller and Damari Parris. Guard Lamonte Bearden, who sat out last season after transferring from Buffalo, will be eligible in 2017-18.{&end}
