Raiders snap skid against Greenwood
The offense was on display from the outset for the Warren East baseball team, which blitzed Greenwood 14-4 in five innings on Monday at Greenwood High School.
Warren East (16-7, 4-0 District 14) scored multiple runs in four out of five innings to remain perfect in District 14 play and pick up its first victory over the Gators since May 8, 2012 – snapping a 10-game losing skid.
“I came in and told them before the game, ‘It’s our time,’ ” Warren East coach Wes Sanford said. “If we were going to do this, now is the time. We can’t wait any longer. We have to take ownership early in this series. Our guys came ready to play. They came ready to play. Our guys were pretty resilient tonight and kept battling.”
Warren East jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run double by birthday boy Jonathan Biggs in the top of the first, but Greenwood (5-15, 1-6) came back with an RBI single from John Hicks and an RBI double by Ty Cunningham as part of a three run bottom of the first off Warren East starter Clay Wagonner.
The right-hander settled in after that, allowing a solo homer in the third to Hicks but nothing else.
“Clay is a battler,” Sanford said. “He’s had some rough times of it this year so far, but has always battled. He’s always come back and battled. That has been good for us to see.”
Warren East regained the lead for good with a three run third inning that included an RBI double from Dakota Campbell and an RBI single by Ty Stringfield.
Biggs smacked a solo homer as part of a two-run fourth and the Raiders put it away with six runs in the fifth, including a two-run single by Campbell and an RBI single by Stringfield.
“(This win is) pretty big,” Campbell said. “We are 4-0 in the district now. We are just going to keep battling. We want that one seed really bad. We are going to work hard every day and try and get it.”
Warren East finished with 10 hits, including two each from Biggs, Sanford and Stringfield.
Hicks and Tanner South finished with two hits each for the Gators.
The two teams will meet again at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Bowling Green High School.
