Purples take Scotties apart for 92-38 win
Glasgow’s visit to Bowling Green on Tuesday night had the makings of an intriguing early-season Region 4 boys’ basketball matchup.
Both regional qualifiers last season, the Scotties and Purples looked to be among the best teams in the area again this year.
On paper, it looked like a good test for both squads.
It wasn’t.
The host Purples overwhelmed Glasgow in the opening minutes, flashing a lethal combination of length and quickness to race out to an early nine-point lead before steadily pulling away for a 92-38 victory.
Bowling Green (2-0) forced eight first-quarter turnovers, converting most of them into points as they put the Scotties away early with a 28-6 advantage in the first quarter.
Glasgow (2-1) was much better offensively in the second quarter with Nick Sorrell’s 12 points sparking a 21-point outing, but the Purples were still better as they increased the lead to 54-27 by halftime.
“We weren’t expecting that as a program and I wasn’t expecting that as a coach,” Glasgow coach James Willett said. “Bowling Green really showed up to play. They weren’t going to overlook us, of course, but they played about as good as they could play and we didn’t. Once it got away from us, we just struggled to find anything positive to get ourselves back in the game.”
The Scotties, missing injured junior center Jaden Franklin, struggled to establish much of a presence in the lane against the taller Purples. Bowling Green’s quickness also proved a major problem, leading to plenty of easy opportunities inside and out. Bowling Green got plenty of transition buckets, but was also deadly from outside as the Purples buried eight 3-pointers spread among six different players.
“I thought our seniors, especially our first group, I thought did a great job,” Purples coach Derrick Clubb said. “We had a couple things we thought might make it harder on their really good players. It’s hard to stop those really good guards they have. We wanted to make things tough on them. We didn’t want them to get comfortable.”
The Purples continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Glasgow 22-4 in the third quarter and 16-7 in the fourth.
Bowling Green sophomore Isaiah Mason finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Senior Trevor Dennis tallied 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore Conner Cooper provided scoring and energy off the bench with 12 points, and senior forward Davion Dice had 10 points and six rebounds. In all, 11 different players scored for the Purples.
“Let me tell you something – Glasgow is going to be as good as anybody moving forward,” Clubb said. “You know, tonight we had a lot of things go our way early that got the game going our way. But they’re well-coached and their kids have a lot of pride. They had a big injury to their family out there that’s rough. James will do a great job with that team and they’ve got a lot of good pieces.
“Sometimes you get the game going your way early and it just kind of snowballs on you. I’ve been on the other end, too.”
Sorrell led the Scotties with 18 points.
Glasgow is back in action Friday against visiting Russell County. Bowling Green takes on Central Hardin on Saturday in the Rafferty’s Shootout at South Warren.
