Concerts in the Park series to return for 40th year
The Downtown Redevelopment Authority is planning something special this year for the 40th anniversary of its BB&T Concerts in the Park series.
Ron Murphy, the authority’s executive director, said the series will feature concerts throughout the summer at Fountain Square Park and Circus Square Park, though many of the details, including dates and times, have not been decided.
“All that’s not set up with definite dates and times, but we are definitely planning a special edition for the 40th anniversary,” he said.
Last year, the series featured concerts at Fountain Square Park every Friday around noon through the month of June and a show in Circus Square Park each Friday evening in July and August.
This year, Murphy said, the days on which concerts would be held have not been decided.
He also said concerts in Fountain Square Park may be held at a different time to draw larger crowds.
“Last year, they did not draw large crowds because it was hot,” he said. “It was extremely hot and they had removed some of the shade trees.”
Murphy said holding the Fountain Square Park concerts in the evening, when the weather is expected to have cooled a bit, is possible, though a decision on how to address low turnouts at those concerts has not been made.
“We’re going to look at all of the options and get some feedback and see what we should do,” he said.
“We’re not totally sure what kind of events to hold at Fountain Square or when, but there will be something going on there.”
The lineup for the concerts is also yet to be decided, Murphy said.
A webpage on downtownbg.org includes a section where electric and acoustic artists interested in performing at one of the summer concerts can fill out an application.
According to the webpage, the deadline for submitting applications is Jan. 15.
The Downtown Redevelopment Authority should have a better idea of the lineup and scheduling of events by late January, Murphy said.
Murphy said he’s happy that Concerts in the Park has been so long-lived, adding that he considers the series to be a way to let people know what downtown Bowling Green has to offer.
“The organization is just dedicated to the promotion of the downtown area and this just brings in a lot of people to downtown Bowling Green,” he said. “As long as people are coming and enjoy(ing) it, we’re going to do it.”
