New hire at Community Education steps into role

After years of working with Warren County Public Schools, Don Sergent is starting a new chapter as the communications director for Community Education.

“It’s an opportunity to touch even more lives, I think,” Sergent said.

Sergent started Monday and said his goals include raising public awareness of the adult enrichment classes Community Education offers, such as foreign language instruction, ballroom dancing and even self-defense courses. Community Education also offers before- and after-school programs to students in the area.

Before taking the job, he handled Warren County Public Schools’ Web and digital content, and before that he was the district’s community relations specialist.

Morgan Watson, the county schools’ chief communications officer, said Sergent was “always eager and ready to highlight the incredible accomplishments of both our educators and students.

“He’ll be greatly missed and we wish him all the best,” she said.

Sergent said his experience with Warren County Public Schools gives him an advantage because of Community Education’s involvement with local schools.

“So I certainly have that experience and know how the schools operate and know some of the people there, really in both school systems,” he said.

Debi Wade Jordan, executive director of the organization, said people were positive about working with Sergent when they were considering the decision. She got a lot of “wows” and “that’s awesome.”

“So I think his relationship with folks in the community and in both school districts certainly will be a strength added to Community Education,” she said.

Sergent also brings journalism experience to his new job. He’s worked for daily newspapers in Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee and South Carolina and a magazine before he moved to Bowling Green in 1992.

His job as community relations specialist involved video production and producing a show to promote the district. He worked under the district’s previous superintendent, Dale Brown.

“I always found Mr. Sergent to be great to work with,” said Brown, who now directs college and school relations for Western Kentucky University.

Brown added that Sergent would give his “absolute best effort” on any project he was given.

“I think Community Education is an excellent fit for Mr. Sergent,” he said.
