WKU’s Music Department and Office of Continuing Education will partner this summer to host the third annual Topper Clarinet camp for students in middle and high school.

The Topper Clarinet Weekend, scheduled for June 10-12, is designed for those who are considering majoring in music in college or who simply love to play their instrument. The residential camp will cover topics including tone development, articulation, music theory basics, sight-reading and much more.

Dr. John Cipolla, director of the camp and professional clarinetist and saxophonist for more than 20 years, is excited to be offering this opportunity to students for yet another year.

 “The WKU Topper Clarinet Weekend is a fun two days of learning about the clarinet and furthering of musical skills,” Cipolla said. “It is intended for young people, grades 7-12, who have played for at least two years and love music and the clarinet. Students play in small groups with others with similar experience and in a clarinet choir.”

Participants will not only enjoy a weekend of music, but will also have the opportunity to become Hilltoppers for a few days. Campers will be housed in a WKU residence hall and will eat in the University dining hall during their stay on campus.

The Clarinet Weekend will conclude June 12 with an afternoon concert in WKU’s Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center.

Sharon Woodward, director of Continuing Education, encourages all those interested in the camp to apply early, as space is limited. “Past camps have included teens from Warren and surrounding counties, as well as Indiana and New Jersey,” Woodward said. “It’s a wonderful chance to enhance skills, make new friends, and experience life on WKU’s campus.”

Early registration for this program concludes April 1. Regular registration will be accepted through May 4.
