WKU Department of Theatre and Dance announces 2011 children’s shows

WKU Department of Theater and Dance is proud to announce the 2011 Children’s Series.  Last year hundreds of area children enjoyed entertainment staged and directed by WKU students. Performances take place in the Lab Theater of Gordon Wilson Hall on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Admission is $4 and seating is not reserved.

Future shows in the Children’s Series are as follows: Hucklebee and the Rhyming Mountain, October 14-16th, Zink: the Myth, the Legend, the Zebra, November 4-6th and Along Came a Dragon, December 9-11th.

“Directing a children’s show has presented a new but exciting challenge,” remarked Will Meredith, a senior from Bowling Green and director of Along Came A Dragon, “I’ve been able to blend the theater with my affinity for Chinese culture and I think we’ve got something really thrilling for our audience.”

The WKU Department of Theater and Dance has expanded its offerings in the last several years to include 4 Mainstage productions, including at least one musical, 2 Mainstage dance concerts, 3 Student-choreographed dance concerts, a Children’s Theatre Series of 4 productions, a Studio Series of student-directed works, a Before Broadway Series featuring a staged reading of a new musical, and a Next Stage Series of showcases and works in progress.

“Most people think of us as an academic department, but we’re also a theater company putting on over 20 productions a year,” commented Dr. David Young, Department Head. “Our intensive production schedule allows our students to learn not only in the classroom and onstage, but also in our shops, studios and behind the scenes.”
