Postseason hoops a reality for several former area players

A group of former area high school basketball standouts are getting first-hand experience with March Madness this week.

Oklahoma redshirt freshman guard Morgan Rich (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2015) and Kentucky sophomore forward LaShae Halsel (Warren Central Class of 2015) are both members of teams that made the Women’s NCAA Tournament.

Halsel, a walk-on who made the team during an open tryout, has played in seven games this season for Kentucky (21-10), which is hosting the Lexington Regional at Memorial Coliseum. Kentucky, a No. 4 seed, faces No. 13 Belmont in Friday’s first round. Game time is 11 a.m. CDT.

Rich, who transferred from Kentucky to Oklahoma mid-season last year and became eligible midway through this season, hasn’t seen much action for the Sooners. In three games, she’s averaged 1.0 points. Oklahoma (22-9), a No. 6 seed, will play No. 11 Gonzaga in the first round on Saturday in Seattle. Game time is 5:30 p.m. CDT.

Ole Miss freshman guard Bree Glover (Glasgow Class of 2016) is also still playing into March. Ole Miss (17-13) will host Grambling in the first round of the WNIT on Thursday night. Game time is 6 p.m. CDT.

Glover has averaged 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds in 18 games this season.

Wabash Valley (Ill.) freshman guard Tia Barnett (Warren Central Class of 2016) will be in action Monday at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Women’s National Basketball Championship in Lubbock, Texas.

Barnett helped Wabash Valley (30-1) earn the No. 12 overall seed in the tournament. This season, Barnett has averaged 10.8 points per game as a part-time starter, while also contributing 1.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Wabash Valley (30-1) will take on No. 21 seed Cochise (Ariz.) on Monday. Game time is 8 p.m. CDT at Lubbock’s Rip Griffin Center.

Also in Lubbock for the NJCAA Division I national championship is Walters State freshman forward Oneisha Turner (Bowling Green Class of 2016).

Walters State (25-6), the No. 14 overall seed, will face No. 19 Tyler (Texas) on Thursday at 10 a.m.

This season, Turner has averaged 5.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 0.9 assists per game.

Campbellsville freshman guard Savannah Gregory (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2016) is sitting out as a redshirt this season, but her team will be in action Wednesday at the NAIA DI Women’s Basketball National Tournament against Talladega (Ala.) at Rimrock Auto Arena at Metra Park in Billings, Mont.

Campbellsville, a No. 3 seed, is 25-6 this season.

Game time 2:45 p.m. CDT.
