Stepping out of your shell: Nonprofit performs biblical Broadway musical

Three levels of a wooden platform were textured and stained to resemble stone as the stage was put in place for Xclaim! Inc.’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

The show is scheduled to be performed at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Xclaim! Center for Youth Performing Arts, 502 College St. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students and $6 for kindergarteners and under.

Executive Director Christopher Cherry decided to do the production because it was a full-length Broadway musical and it creates a serious challenge for youths involved in the organization.

Xclaim is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate, inspire and recognize young performance artists and their mentors in southcentral Kentucky. Xclaim programs provide training, development and performance opportunities for youths in a positive and supportive environment.

“We’ve got some teenage students who have quite a bit of talent, and so we like to provide them adequate challenges for that talent,” Cherry said. “Every song in the show is a different genre of music. So, it takes you on quite a ride.”

The musical has 21 actors ranging from 9 years old to adult. Joseph is being played by Truman Tinius, 13, who is excited to be doing the show with his 15-year-old sister, Chapel Tinius.

“I’ve been doing plays for a while, and I just think the music in this one is really amazing,” Truman said. “My sister has been wanting to do this show for a really long time, and so I thought it be a good experience for us to do it together because we don’t really get to do a lot together anymore, show wise.”

Truman said he would like to pursue acting in the future and his favorite part about acting is being able to step into other people’s shoes and the variety of shows that are available to be involved.

“Experiencing all the different possible ways you could go in one direction with a line and all the ways you can take it,” he said. “There’s just so many and all the varieties of shows, it’s just it’s never-ending.”

The cast started rehearsing the show at the end of February, and Cherry said he is pleased with the production and how it’s come together. He said the musical is a great story with a lot of great themes, which follows the biblical story of Joseph and the coat of many colors.

It’s fun for all ages and the music is very fun, upbeat and uplifting, he said.

“The show is really entertaining, it’s well written and will sure to be a lot of fun for the audience,” Cherry said.

Bowling Green High School student Catherine Harris, 15, is playing one of Joseph’s brothers, Judah. Having previously performed with Xclaim over the years, she feels part of a family.

“I just love the feeling I get here,” Catherine said. “This is my first back-to-back music and dancing because I’ve done all (Cherry’s) dramas and the musicals, but this is the hardest I’ve ever done, and it’s such a great experience because it pushes me to do more.”

Catherine said her favorite part in the musical is the song called “Pharaoh’s Story” where the cast gets to dress up in poodle skirts and leather jackets and she gets to dance with her best friend. She also would like to pursue acting in the future.

“I get to step out of my skin to be someone else, and I love it because sometimes my life’s not that great and I can just leave it for something else that’s much greater,” Harris said.

Amanda Atkinson’s daughter, Rachel, is also in the musical and she said her involvement in the organization has brought her daughter out of her shell and it’s the best thing that could have happened in their family.

“They’ve really made lasting friendships and it’s given them confidence to try something that they might have been afraid of and see that they can be successful at it,” Atkinson said.
