State seeks feedback on ‘Bible literacy’ course standards

The public can offer feedback on proposed standards for elective social studies courses that focus on the literary style and historical impact of the Bible.

The courses are already being taught in some Kentucky high schools.

The Kentucky Department of Education will accept feedback up to Dec. 10 before it submits a final set of standards to the Kentucky Board of Education for consideration, a news release said.

House Bill 128 was signed into law by Gov. Matt Bevin in April. It calls for the creation of academic standards for courses that focus on “the Hebrew scriptures, Old Testament of the Bible, the New Testament or a combination of the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament of the Bible,” according to the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission’s website.

The public can provide feedback through an online survey available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/Bibleliteracy. The survey allows respondents to affirm the standards’ wording or explain how they should be revised.
