City to vote on Insight contract

The Bowling Green Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on the second readings of several agenda items Tuesday night, as well as support the recent move by Warren County Fiscal Court to ban synthetic marijuana.

The City Commission is also expected to vote on an ordinance extending the city’s franchise agreement with Insight Communications. The new agreement will run through Jan. 31, 2013, a time frame that is expected to include Insight’s merger with Time Warner Cable. According to documents, the city will enter an agreement with both Insight and Time Warner.

Mayor Bruce Wilkerson said the city has not been given any indication as to when local customers will see the merger take place. He said the city did not sign the typical five-year extension agreement because of the merger.

“We haven’t been informed, other than the merger is there, and we’re just trying to play it safe by limiting this particular agreement to one year,” Wilkerson said.

Not all residents will be pleased by the news of Insight remaining in the area, but Wilkerson said it’s important to remember that the agreement is not exclusive. Wilkerson said the city always passes on comments or concerns to Insight.

“We always forward that information to the cable provider,” Wilkerson said. “Sometimes they address it, sometimes they don’t. We don’t have the legal authority to address some of those concerns – most have to do with price and content.”

The city will also vote on the second reading of an ordinance that would limit the use of fireworks in the city, as well as amending the ordinance addressing the sale of fireworks in the city. And while the vote will probably put to rest one issue for the commission, Wilkerson knows there’s more to come.

“When you’re a city government, there’s always a new issue,” Wilkerson said. “We’ll have those behind us, but there will be new ones coming forward.”

The commission will outline its priorities for 2012 at the City Commission’s retreat next month.

The city will also vote on a resolution supporting the decision last week by Warren County Fiscal Court to ban the sale and use of several types of synthetic marijuana and cannabinoids.

Finally, the city will honor Bowling Green High School’s football team, which won the KHSAA Class 5A state championship earlier this month.

Wilkerson said players and coaches have been invited to Tuesday night’s meeting, where a joint proclamation with Warren County Fiscal Court will be declared in honor of the Purples.
