Hayles produces 4-hit day for Central Alabama in baseball win

Central Alabama Community College catcher Drew Hayles (Greenwood Class of 2015) had a four-hit day in Thursday’s 9-7 win over Marion Military Institute (Ala.).

Hayles was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the game. He also scored a run.

Central Alabama (24-21) next hosts Marion Military in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Spalding sophomore first baseman Bryce Spalding (Greenwood Class of 2015) cracked a solo home run in Thursday’s 9-3 baseball loss to host Thomas More.

Golden Eagles sophomore designated hitter Matt Harper (Logan County Class of 2015) added a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI, and junior catcher Ian Woodall (Logan County Class of 2014) chipped in with a single for Spalding. Harper also pitched the final inning for the Golden Eagles, striking out one in the scoreless frame.

Spalding (21-10) is back in action Saturday with a doubleheader at Blackburn (Ill.). College.

Olney Central (Ill.) third baseman Ryan Hinkley (Glasgow Class of 2014) was 1-for-2 with a run scored and drew a pair of walks in Thursday’s 16-8 road win over Southeastern Illinois College.

Olney Central (35-7) hosts Southeastern Illinois in a doubleheader Saturday.

Midway third baseman Barrett Croslin (Russellville Class of 2014) went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Thursday’s 3-2 loss to Rio Grande (Ohio).

Midway (22-24 overall, 19-11 River State Conference) plays another doubleheader at Rio Grande on Friday.

Bethel (Tenn.) catcher Emmi Thurmond (Franklin-Simpson Class of 2014) ripped a two-run double as part of an eight-inning outburst in Thursday’s 8-0 win over Lane College (Tenn.) on Thursday.

Bethel (22-22) is back in action Friday, hosting Blue Mountain (Miss.) for a doubleheader.

Transylvania sophomore Abby Blackburn (Bowling Green Class of 2015) finished second in her division in last weekend’s FENCE Horse Trials at the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center in Tryon, N.C.

Competing schools in the competition included Kentucky, Georgia, Clemson, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Transylvania’s Eventing team returns to action May 25-28 at the Intercollegiate Championships in Lexington, Va.

Blackburn and her horse, Joy Girl, won their division at the inaugural intercollegiate eventing championships last May.

A trio of former area standouts have been named as Mid-South Conference All-Academic Team members.

In men’s tennis, Cumberlands senior Kenny Wilson (South Warren Class of 2013) was named to the all-academic team.

Campbellsville’s Kylie Withrow (Barren County Class of 2015) and Lindsey Wilson’s Shayna Cockrill (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2014) earned all-academic team honors in women’s golf.

In order to be nominated by an institution, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved at least sophomore academic status.
