Jockey Kendrick Carmouche suffered a hairline fracture of his right femur when he went down in a spill after his mount Chattel clipped heels in the stretch during Saturday’s $500,000 Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs in Franklin, according to Daily Racing Form writer Marty McGee and confirmed by the jockey’s agent.

Carmouche told McGee, who spoke with the jockey by phone early Sunday, that he would be transferred from TriStar Skyline Medical Center north of Nashville to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for surgery. Kevin Bubser, the jockey’s agent, said the surgery would be either late Sunday or early Monday.

“I had another set of X-rays taken and there’s no separation in the bone,” Carmouche told McGee. “They’re going to put a screw in it and I’m going to be able to put pressure on the leg” soon thereafter. “They’re saying seven to eight weeks before I’m back riding.”

Chattel was battling for the lead with eventual winner Moonlight Romance and Sovereign Impact when Sovereign Impact came out sharply and caused Chattel to clip heels and fall, sending Carmouche hard to the ground. Chattel suffered a fractured right shoulder in the spill and had to be euthanized. Sovereign Impact, ridden by Adam Beschizza, was disqualified from third to last for causing interference. The filly Moonlight Romance wound up winning the race by three lengths over the late-running Life Mission.

Chattel, owned by David Baxter and trained by Brandon McFarlane, was coming off a victory in Saratoga’s $100,000 Skidmore Stakes.

Carmouche, who grew up in Louisiana and now rides in New York as well as Parx Racing near Philadelphia, has won 3,106 races and more than $100 million in purses in a career that began in 2000.

The jockey told McGee that he has been overwhelmed by “two or three hundred” calls and texts and to “please tell everybody out there how much I appreciate their support.”

Bronson, who finished fourth in Saturday’s $750,000 Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup, suffered fatal injuries after the finish. Bronson was vanned off the course and the extent of his injuries weren’t immediately apparent.

“Past the wire, he injured his right hind leg catastrophically,” said chief state steward Barbara Borden. “They had to euthanize him.”

Bronson, trained by Mike Maker for Three Diamonds Farm, finished 1 1/4 lengths behind victorious Arklow. Maker and Three Diamonds also finished second by a half-length with Bigger Picture as Maker-trained horses finished second, third (Soglio), fourth and fifth (2017 winner Oscar Nominated).

Sunday’s card canceled

Because of a deluge of rain, Kentucky Downs canceled Sunday’s card and moved it to Wednesday. All scratches for Sunday have been voided, and those horses will have a chance to run Sunday if their connections desire. However, new scratches must be issued if the horse is not going to run. Horses who drew in off the eligible-list will need new scratches in order to run. The overnight (entry sheet) has been redone for Wednesday, the only changes from Sunday being a slight adjustment to post times of the later races.
