Grand jury looking into boy’s death

A Warren County grand jury was expected to hear testimony today about the 1996 death of a 9-year-old boy whose body was exhumed after questions were raised about whether the death was accidental. Timmy Wood died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., in July 1996 from head injuries suffered while at the Warren County home of his foster parent, Wendell Decker. State Medical Examiner Tracy Corey Handy will testify about the autopsy she performed after exhuming Timmy’s body in June and about the likely circumstances that could have caused the type of injuries he suffered, Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Wilson said. Kentucky State Police Detective Steve Fitts will testify about what police found during an initial look into the death and what has been found since the case came to the forefront this summer. At the time of Timmy’s death, it was believed he suffered the injuries during a fall at Decker’s home. An autopsy was not performed then because of apparent miscommunication between Kentucky and Tennessee. Since he died, questions about Timmy’s death were raised in a civil lawsuit filed by his parents, Rena Wood and Hubert Vaughn, against Decker and LifeSkills Inc. the agency that placed Timmy with Decker. Former state Medical Examiner George Nichols, now a consultant in the civil case, concluded that Timmy’s death was a homicide. After that information became public in court documents, Wilson and Fitts began re-examining the case. Today’s testimony was to be the first of at least two grand jury sessions dealing with the case. Wilson, who eventually will present a range of charges that could be levied in the case, said he won’t seek an indictment until later in the month because he wants to give adequate time to anyone who might be indicted to find appropriate legal representation.
