Former Warren Central star Savage transferring to WKU
A former local high school basketball star will be suiting up for Western Kentucky.
Warren Central High School grad Jared Savage will transfer from Austin Peay to WKU, sources told the Daily News on Friday.
Savage, a guard, announced his intention to transfer from the APSU program last month, shortly after the introduction of new Governors coach Matt Figger.
Lipscomb announced last month that Savage would be transferring to the Bisons program. The 6-foot-5 guard didn’t sign a binding national letter of intent with the program.
Sources say the guard changed his mind and will instead become a Hilltopper. He’ll likely join the program later this month, sources said.
WKU cannot announce the transfer until Savage signs a financial aid agreement or NLI.
Savage, who just completed his sophomore season at Austin Peay, must sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He can then play his final two seasons of college basketball in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
Savage averaged 10.3 points per game in 2016-17, playing for a Governors program where his father, Jermaine Savage, was a star in the 1990s.
Jared Savage’s sophomore season included a 24-point outing in a 97-92 WKU win on Dec. 28 in E.A. Diddle Arena. He hit 8 of 10 field goals, 5 of 6 3-pointers and 3 of 3 free throws that night against the Hilltoppers.
Savage helped Austin Peay to an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2015-16. He was named to the All-OVC team, scoring 24 points against UT-Martin in the tourney championship game.
Savage averaged 18 points and 9.4 rebounds per game as a high school senior in 2014-15 for WCHS coach William Unseld’s Dragons. He scored a combined 836 over his final two years at Central before joining former teammate Chris Porter-Bunton at Austin Peay.
Savage is one of a group of newcomers to the program next year. Fall signees Josh Anderson, Taveion Hollingsworth and Mitchell Robinson will all arrive this summer, as will spring signees Jordan Brangers – a junior college prospect – and Jake Ohmer.
Moustapha Diagne, who’s been enrolled at WKU since last fall, is expected to officially join the roster this summer. Robinson Idehen and Miles Weber, both of whom enrolled this spring, are targeted to join the roster after the fall semester.
Former Buffalo transfer Lamonte Bearden will take the floor this season after sitting out the 2016-17 campaign.
The four returning players from last year’s active roster are Justin Johnson, Jabari McGhee, Damari Parris and Tyler Miller, a walk-on.
