Dragons earn second shutout win over Bowling Green
Warren Central is right where it wants to be. Bowling Green couldn’t be further from it.
The Dragons made it a regular-season sweep over the Purples with four different scorers in a 4-0 win Tuesday.
Warren Central (10-4 overall, 4-1 District 14) has won six straight and outscored Bowling Green 8-0 in the regular-season series. The Dragons took 30 minutes to turn up the heat with three goals in the first half and Jimmy Estrada’s goal with 13 minutes left in regulation.
“We didn’t start out that good, but after the first goal we put our heads together and then we just decided to play as a team more,” said senior August Say, who scored the third goal with less than two minutes left in the first half. “We had more possessions and more shots on goal.”
Another balanced effort helped Warren Central. Only James Khual has scored multiple goals in any of the last three games. Kaung Hein leads the team with 12 goals, but five others have at least four goals on the year.
To go with four different scorers Tuesday night at The Pit also came four different players with assists. That balance has kept the Dragons dangerous of late.
“We don’t know who it’s going to come from and I like it that way because that means we’re sharing the ball and a lot of the goals are assisted and just enjoying getting each other involved,” Warren Central coach Aaron Ray said. “However it goes in, we’re happy it happens.”
Damir Beganovic sent a direct kick into the box and connected with Kiza Anzuruni on a header for the first goal in the 29th minute. Hein collected a long ball and scored on a one-timer from the left side in the 35th minute.
Then with just over a minute left in the half, Say contained a ball played out of a corner kick and curled in a shot from about 30 yards directly in front of the net for the three-goal lead.
Six of Warren Central’s eight shots in the first half were put on goal. The Dragons dominated possession in the first half after Bowling Green got off a pair of shots in the first 15 minutes.
“We start slow sometimes and there’s going to be five to 10 minutes where we’re out of it,” Ray said. “Once things start clicking, we can play our game.”
The win places the Dragons atop the district standings with South Warren. The Spartans, who defeated Warren East on Tuesday, have yet to lose in four district games and will travel to play the Dragons on Thursday. The Dragons’ current winning streak includes three shutouts and three games with just one goal allowed.
“(South Warren) looks like one of the better teams in southern Kentucky,” Ray said. “Hopefully we give them a good game.”
Bowling Green’s 10-game losing streak since the season opener ensures the Purples more losses than any season in the past 20 years. Bowling Green (1-10, 1-4) has just 10 goals through 12 games and hasn’t scored more than one goal in a game since beating Warren East 4-0 on Aug. 26.
The Purples have now been shut out in three straight games after losing to Warren Central by four goals last week and a 2-0 loss at top-ranked St. Xavier on Saturday.
Outside of their two shots early in the first half, the Purples still managed just three looks at the net in the second half against Warren Central.
Junior captain Alex Yusk hopes the tide finally turns soon with three district games spanning the next nine days. Bowling Green hosts Greenwood at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
“I just see a lack of passion and we need to find that passion because the season is running out and we need something to kick-start it,” Yusk said. “It’s extremely important. We want to show teams we’re ready for the postseason and sadly we didn’t tonight. We’ll be back for Greenwood.”{&end}
