South Warren, Greenwood headed to finals
It will be familiar rivals in the District 14 championship after South Warren and Greenwood picked up wins in Tuesday’s semifinals at Bowling Green High School.
South Warren beat Bowling Green 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-17) and Greenwood followed with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-19) victory over Warren East.
The Spartans and Gators will now face off for a fifth straight year in the District 14 title game, with both teams advancing to the Region 4 tournament that begins Monday at Franklin-Simpson.
“That was our goal,” Greenwood coach Alan Whittinghill said. “I said, ‘Hey, if you don’t win Tuesday night you don’t go anywhere.’ You can argue that this match is more important than any match you play, but now that we got to Thursday we are going to put our full effort into it and hopefully clean our game up a little bit.”
South Warren (22-9) came roaring out of the gates against Bowling Green, closing game one with a 17-3 run. The Spartans jumped out to an 8-0 advantage in game two, with Bowling Green (18-17) unable to get closer than six points.
The Lady Purples tried to battle back in game three, with the teams exchanging the lead three times before South Warren got seven straight points to make the score 18-11 and take the lead for good.
“Hats off to Bowling Green, they pushed us all season long,” South Warren coach Justin Griffin said. “We were doing everything we can to try and get prepared for this match. We knew mentally that it was going to be a battle. We just talked about going out and winning as many points as we could win and we did that. We stayed focused and had high energy throughout the whole match. I’m really excited that we’ve extended our season another week.”
Ashtyn Vandiver led South Warren with 10 kills. Erin Nerland had nine kills, Lexi Button finished with eight kills with Sophie Pemberton adding seven. Sydney Clayton had 38 assists.
“I thought we played really well and clean,” Pemberton said. “Our passers did a good job of letting our offense know what was open and where we needed to hit it. Sydney’s sets were good, so I thought we played really well tonight. I’m excited for the finals and region to come.”
Anna Neal led Bowling Green with five kills.
Greenwood (31-5) started slow before Annee Lasley and Katie Howard combined for six kills in a 6-0 run that made the score 17-11. Warren East (22-15) was unable to get closer than five points the rest of the game.
The Lady Gators scored the first four points in game two and slowly extended the lead to as much as 10 points. In game three, Greenwood never trailed, building a 22-13 advantage before Warren East made one final run – getting as close as 23-19 before kills by Lasley and Howard closed it out.
“I think we did just enough to win at times,” Whittinghill said. “We are trying to get our lineup back together and see what we can do. I am excited about Thursday night. It’s going to be fun.”
Howard led the Lady Gators with 17 kills, while Howard added 12.
“When our passing is there like it was tonight our sets are there,” Howard said. “We just try to connect, especially against a good blocking team like Warren East.”
Jordan Fulkerson led Warren East with eight kills.
South Warren and Greenwood will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at BGHS. The Lady Gators swept the regular-season series and won the District 14 Tournament last season, but South Warren went on to win the region title a week later.
“They are a talented team,” Griffin said. “They just put so much pressure on you. They went 31-5 and not with an easy schedule. Hopefully we come out and play well, but next week is when we really want to play well.”
