Dragons race past Glasgow for third straight road win

GLASGOW – Warren Central’s boys’ basketball team has yet to play a home game this season, but Monday night was about as close to the real thing as Kobe Brents could get.

Brents, along with Dragons teammate Kris Horn, played on their old home court Monday with their new team after both transferred to Warren Central over the summer.

After exchanging warm greetings with his former Scotties teammates during the pregame handshakes, Brents commenced to helping the Dragons take down Glasgow for an 84-62 victory.

Brents had 16 points in the win, including four 3-pointers.

“It meant more to me because I’ve been playing with these guys since like first, second grade,” Brents said of facing Glasgow. “To go against them is something different. I’m not really used to it.”

Warren Central (3-0) broke open a close game with a crushing third-quarter run. The second half opened in a 32-all tie, but the Dragons didn’t let it stay that way as they ripped off a 16-0 run to surge to a 48-32 lead.

The Scotties’ Nik Sorrell finally answered with a basket in the lane with 4:49 left in the quarter, but by then Warren Central had found its groove. The Dragons outscored the Scotties 29-8 in the third quarter, helped along by seven Glasgow turnovers.

Warren Central’s Tayshaun Bibb, held to four points in the first half, had 10 in the decisive third quarter and finished with a game-high 21.

Bibb, one of the holdovers from last season’s Region 4 championship team that reached the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet Sixteen semifinals, said the Dragons are still coming together as they incorporate numerous newcomers to this year’s squad.

“We’re still working on the chemistry,” Bibb said. “Getting everybody playing together, that’s the main thing. We’re going to be fine, though.”

The Dragons flashed impressive depth right from the opening tip as Warren Central coach William Unseld regularly swapped out players, sometimes five at a time, to maintain the Dragons’ constant full-court pressure.

It helped the Dragons grab a 19-12 lead after the first quarter, but the Scotties regrouped in the second. Sorrell, Glasgow’s high-scoring guard, diced up Central’s defense for nine points in the quarter as the Scotties surged back to lead by as many as five at 31-26 on his made free throw with 1:57 left in the half.

Warren Central’s Geovonni Floyd scored on back-to-back possessions to get most of that back and Bibb’s bucket in the paint knotted the score at halftime.

Then came the Dragons’ second-half charge and Glasgow (4-2) couldn’t recover.

“I felt like we had a good game plan and the kids executed it well in the first half,” Scotties coach James Willett said. “We tried to keep them out of the transition as much as possible and we were successful there in the first half. We just couldn’t stop the run in the third quarter, obviously. I think Central did a really good job adjusting to us and taking away Sorrell by double-teaming him in the second half.

“We didn’t really have an audible call for that, so we took some bad shots which led to them getting rebounds and going on us. I think that was the difference in the game.”

Sorrell had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Tayshaun Bradley added 11 points and Tucker Kirkpatrick and Robert Kingery had 10 each for the Scotties.

Joining Bibb and Brents as double-digit scorers for the Dragons were D’Andre Boyd – who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds – and Floyd with 10 points.

“I’m happy we’re 3-0 – we’re 3-0 on the road,” Unseld said. “We finally get to go home and play a game, so I’m proud of the kids. We’ve played in three different arenas and we scored 80-plus in all three games. Now we’ve got to figure out how we can guard somebody.”

Host Glasgow held the Lady Dragons to two points in the first half and rolled to a 45-12 victory Monday.

“I thought we did a good job defensively,” Lady Scotties coach Justin Stinson said. “I thought we were active with our hands. I thought we did a nice job of contesting shots, I thought we got our hands on a lot of balls, blocked several shots and made it difficult for them to get a clean look.”

Ashanti Gore tallied a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Amanda Lee added 14 points for the Lady Scotties. Glasgow (4-1) hosts Hart County on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Krisheana Johnson scored five points to lead the Lady Dragons, who dropped to 0-7.

“Right now, if you can’t tell we struggle to score the ball,” WCHS coach Joe Hood said. “When you get the ball in the bucket, the energy level (on defense) pops up for us. And to go a half with scoring two points, there wasn’t much good vibes out there.”

Warren Central is back in action Tuesday at home against Butler County at 7:30 p.m.
