Community Education opens registration for fall adult education courses
Although more well known for its before- and after-school programs, Community Education originally got its start with adult education.
“It’s always been something that’s been very important to community education as an organization to offer inexpensive opportunities for adults to learn,” said Alice Tarnagda, Community Education’s adult enrichment coordinator.
Registration for Community Education’s fall classes is now open and available online. The wide range of courses covers painting, pottery, dance, computer proficiency, fitness, languages and other topics. Tarnagda said courses help adults navigate the legal and health care systems, develop professional skills and experience personal growth.
Instructor Nancye Doggett is teaching ballroom and Latin dancing this fall with her husband, Mark. She’s seen students gain the confidence to stand out on the dance floor through the lessons.
“There’s always something to learn,” she said. “To be able to pass on what we know and to be able to share it with others is a pure joy to us.”
Another instructor, Nancy Richey, finds fulfillment through genealogy. Richey is a professor with the Department of Library Special Collections at Western Kentucky University. She’ll teach a course about finding Civil War ancestors.
“You can make those people come alive again when you learn about them and there will be some heroes in there,” she said.
With fall approaching there are special course offerings. Three canning courses are available, which can be helpful for summer gardeners.
“This should provide some benefit to folks to be able to know ‘how can I grow my own food and then store it correctly?'” Tarnagda said.
Other classes show students how to create holiday decorations.
Students can register online, over the phone or by visiting Community Education at 1227 Westen Ave. Although Tarnagda said there are no registration deadlines, she recommends registering early.
