WKU softball earns pair of wins at Samford Invitational

Western Kentucky’s softball team won twice Saturday in the Samford Invitational, beating Jackson State 4-0 in the opener before downing host Samford 8-1 in the second game in Birmingham, Ala.
WKU’s Shelby Nunn and Kelsey Aikey combined on a one-hit shutout against Jackson State. Nunn started and got the win, tossing five innings while allowing one hit and no walks while striking out five. Aikey pitched the last two innings, striking out five.
Jordan Thomas, Paige Carter and Kennedy Sullivan had RBIs for the Hilltoppers.
Sullivan earned a complete-game victory against Samford, tossing seven innings while giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks with 17 strikeouts.
Rebekah Engelhardt homered and had a pair of hits for WKU (13-2). Sullivan added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Shannon Plese and Taylor Davis each had two hits and an RBI.
The Hilltoppers’ scheduled games Sunday against Houston Baptist and Samford were canceled due to inclement weather.
WKU returns to action Friday with games against Wright State and host Kennesaw State in the Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament in Kennesaw, Ga.
