A former Lady Topper signee is now headed to the Southeastern Conference.
Elysa Wesolek, who was originally part of Western Kentucky’s 2018 freshman signing class, was released from her letter of intent and is now committed to South Carolina, she announced Monday night via Twitter.
Wesolek, a 6-foot-2 forward and South Carolina native, tweeted: “I would like to thank Coach Greg Collins and WKU for allowing me to re-open my recruitment. After an official visit, I have decided to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of South Carolina. I look forward to playing for Coach Dawn Staley and her outstanding staff.”
South Carolina has won four straight SEC Tournament championships and won the 2017 NCAA Tournament championship.
Wesolek is the second Lady Topper to request her release from WKU since former coach Michelle Clark-Heard left for Cincinnati in March.
Greg Collins was promoted to head coach March 27.
Akira Levy also requested her release from WKU in March.
Levy is a two-time Class AA Miss Basketball who was the highest-rated recruit in WKU’s fall signing class, ranking as the No. 66 prospect in the country for the Class of 2018 and the No. 18 point guard.
Wesolek was rated as the 47th overall forward in the country and averaged 18.5 points and 9.2 rebounds last season for Northwood High School in Charleston, S.C.
Levy and Wesolek were part of a four-member signing class that still includes 6-3 center Kallie Searcy (Brentwood, Tenn.) and 5-11 guard Meral Abdelgawad (Egypt).
