Six Lady Tops garner academic all-district honors

Western Kentucky’s women’s soccer team had six student-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, the organization announced Thursday.

WKU’s Maddie Davis, Sydney Ernst, Katie Erwin, Annah Hopkins, Anna Isger and Lily Rummo all earned the honor.

Ernst was a steady presence for the Lady Toppers in the midfield across five seasons. She finished her career having played in the seventh most career games (81) by a WKU player and starting in the sixth most (71) by a Lady Topper. In 2023, Ernst notched two assists and played in all 18 games. She was named to the All-CUSA Third Team this season.

The St. Louis native is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology at WKU.

Erwin scored a team-leading six goals this season. That included three game-winners, which ranked as the fourth most in CUSA and 89th most in the nation. Her four goals in league play were the third most in the conference and her 10 points were second. Erwin was named CUSA Offensive Player of the Week twice this season. Erwin was named to the All-Conference USA First Team.

The Louisville native is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration. Erwin previously earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at WKU. Erwin was named to the CUSA All-Academic First Team this season, her third academic team honor from the conference. She also earned CSC (formally CoSIDA) Academic All-District honors in 2021.

Isger notched four points this season on two assists and a goal. Three of those points came in the same match when she scored a goal and earned an assist against Union. She also assisted on the game-winning goal at Sam Houston. The junior played in all 18 matches for WKU this season.

The Indianapolis native is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in marketing at WKU.

Hopkins played an integral role in the WKU defense that shut out four of seven conference opponents played and averaged just .285 goals against in CUSA play. She led the WKU defense to a 50.0 shutout percentage on the season which was the 36th best percentage in the country. She and the defense also have a 0.833 goals against average for the season, which was 51st in the nation.

The Evansville, Ind., native is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology and will be attending medical school next fall. Hopkins will also be honored with the Ogden Foundation Scholarship this December during the college recognition ceremonies, which is the top undergraduate academic award at WKU. Earlier this season, Hopkins earned CUSA All-Academic First Team honors.

Davis had eight shutouts on the season, including four in CUSA play. Her eight shutouts were the second most in CUSA and the 45th most in the country. Her 0.882 goals against average for the season was third in the league. Her 0.500 goals against average in CUSA play was the top mark in the league. Also in conference play, Davis had the most saves (26) and had the second most shutouts. Davis was named to the All-CUSA Second Team this season.

The Waterloo, Ill., native is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architectural science. Earlier this season, Davis was named to the CUSA All-Academic Second Team.

Rummo made the switch from offensive player to the backline this season and played a major part in the team’s success. Like Hopkins, she helped lead the team to nine shutouts and a 0.83 goals against average for the season.

The Franklin, Tenn., native is pursuing a master’s degree in education. Rummo previously earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from WKU. She earned CUSA All-Academic Second Team honors earlier this season, her second time on the conference academic team.
